motorcycle auction imageOne thing you can be certain of is the fact that criminals are getting more and more creative by the minute. As these criminals get caught, their vast empires (consisting of a multitude of assets) are confiscated by the police. These assets comprise of pretty much anything you can imagine, including motorcycles.

Police motorcycle auctions have for many years gotten enthusiasts exited - and for good reason! Here you'll find excellent motors for very low prices.

There are two types of motorcycles generally being auctioned. On the one hand there are confiscated bikes from criminals or motorcycles involved in criminal activity. On the other hand police departments also tend to auction their own motorcycles after a certain period of use. We’ll look at both these two:

“Crime related” motorcycles

Don’t let my terminology put you off. The term ‘crime’ has no sinister meaning in this context, but rather refers to the motorcycles’ origin. Many of these motorcycles are in an immaculate condition and make for great purchases.

A quick tip;

If you’re interested in these, have a close look at the paperwork. In some cases you as the new owner will have to register the bike again as they are procured without the proper documentation in place. If you’re lucky, the police would have taken care of that already and you’ll be ready to tackle the open roads straight away!

Department motorcycles

Rarely, but every once in a while, your local police department will also auction some of its own motorcycles in the department’s fleet. These are the ones you should really be on the lookout for. Apart from the fact that police motorcycles are usually superior mechanically, the department does an excellent job of maintaining these bikes. Chances are that they have been serviced at very regular intervals and you’ll have a motorcycle that will last you for years.

Keep in mind that these motorcycles do not come with any warranties. Once you bought it, it’s yours with all its benefits and faults. It is therefore imperative to ‘do your homework’ and have an adequate checklist in place to make sure you don’t buy something that will give you endless trouble from the moment you drive out the police station.

Here is a list of seven things to start with. It’s by no means exhaustive, but it’s a good guideline to follow as a quality checklist:

  • The handlebars has to be level and the steering must handle effortlessly
  • Look at the condition of the seat. A large number of cracks would indicate that it has been used often.
  • Are the forks twisted in any way?
  • The brakes must be in a working condition and the clutch released when pressed
  • Faulty tires cause a lot of accidents. Check the condition of the tyres.
  • Make sure ALL of the lights, gauges and switches work
  • Any leaks should ring alarm bells. Be hawkish on these.

There is no shortage of great testimonials of folks that successfully used police motorcycle auctions. Bear in mind however that, as with pretty much all vehicle auctions, you won’t have the opportunity to test drive the motorcycle before you buy. When you therefore do your inspection and analysis make sure to take your time and do it right. If not, your bargain purchase can turn into a mechanical nightmare that will keep you awake at nights.
