It is no secret that the government conducts daily auctions throughout the country in order to dispose of various goods and assets which they deem as not crucial any longer in the delivery of their service. These events take place on all levels of government and, for the most part, have been covered in detail in other sections of this website. Here we’ll have a look at the more obscure, but also very profitable, sources of government surplus auctions.
Department of Defense (DoD)
The agency tasked with the disposal of goods at the DoD is known as the Defense Re-utilization and Marketing Service. They are responsible to administer the sale of surplus assets within the various agencies of the DoD. The process is simple. If neither the DoD or any other federal agency are in need of a specific property item in the immediate or foreseeable future, it may be sold.

There are in excess of 200 military bases across the United States and globally where these government surplus auction sales are held. The bulk of sales however take place in the USA.
Depending on the size of the goods, it may be sold in lots or as individual items – the catalog will usually detail this info.
One little known fact with auctions at the DoD is that the goods are usually in pristine condition. The DoD manages a program known as the “Preventative Maintenance Schedules”. It means that any asset of value gets a regular check up.
In order to participate in this auction you need to be over 18 years of age and not be employed or associated in any official capacity with the Defense Re-utilization and Marketing Service.
National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)
Now this is an auction event that many people often overlook. Every year NASA disposes of hundreds of millions in dollars worth of goods and various assets which they no longer need.
Similar to goods at the DoD they are sold both as individual items or in lots. The sales are conducted mainly by three different entities. These are:
NASA staff. These sales are conducted at their centers in Green Belt (Maryland), Wallops Island (Virginia) and Cleveland (Ohio).
General Services Administration. The GSA also administers a part of the government surplus auction on behalf of NASA at a large number of their centers across the country.
Department of Defense. They also handle some sales of NASA surplus property at select centers
NASA goods can include anything from filing cabinets, partitions, printing equipment as well as technological advanced goods like robots and lab equipment. Although you may not benefit from all of it, there’s sure to be something that will meet your needs!
Both these two government organizations comprise just a small fraction of the total surplus auctions that take place everyday around the country. Although the items for sale are varied and their source differs wildly, they do have one common denominator – Prices are low and the quality of goods are excellent.
