County
Sheriff Auctions
In many ways the
goods that will be auctioned at county sheriff
auctions are very similar to what you will find at a
city auction. The difference is that it relates to
countywide collections. The source varies from lost-,
impounded- or even stolen goods which were confiscated by
the sheriff’s department.
Arguably the biggest attraction for these
auctions is that competition is not that stiff as for other
federal agency auctions. This causes the bargains to be
extensive and usually you’ll be able to pick a number
of goods for well below a third of their true
value.
County Sheriff auctions are renowned
for its very little advertising. County offices have budgets
which they need to strictly adhere to and normally there’s
little room for advertisements on publications such as
newspapers. As mentioned above, this causes attendance (AND
PRICES) to be low at the auctions!

So where do you start
looking?
Every county has a different procedure.
Usually you can start by contacting the sheriff’s office and
enquire as to who the property administrator is.
This person will be best positioned to give you advice on
the next upcoming event. Alternatively you can consult the
county courthouse on the public notice
board.
So how does it
work?
Again, this is very different from one
county to the next. Best would be to speak to the relevant
department on the details. Generally the sheriff’s
department will either outsource this to a private firm who
will in turn auction goods whenever the department sends it
over.
If the county is bigger (or just prefers
to do things a little different) they can conduct the
auctions themselves. They will be held either at fixed
intervals or whenever the need arises. Most counties will
wait for a build up of goods before they host an event. It’s
worthwhile to regularly check the county notice
board.
Their preview times are a little different
than for state or federal auctions which host viewing slots
days before the auctions. The county sheriff’s department
often only open the warehouse for viewing by the public a
few hours before the auction. Make sure that you are early
for as much time as possible. You will obviously need as
much time as you can get.
If you have the winning bid, payment is
very straightforward. County sheriff auctions want to keep
it simple and stick to either cash or card payment
(especially if it’s handled by a private company). You will
normally need to remove the goods on the same day you
purchased it.
Although county sheriff auctions are not
as regular as other auction types, you can pick up great
bargains with little effort whenever they
occur.
